College Football Picks

I know some of you are probably too busy these days managing your NFL fantasy football teams, but for those of you who are interested in picking some select college football games this fall, this competition is for you. It's very simple, each week I will post a list of college football games. All you have to do is check the list and pick your winners for each game. Email your picks to me at brokensword29@comcast.net before the Thursday night games begin. For each game you pick correctly, you'll get one point. Whoever has the most points at the end of the season wins. It's that simple . . . and just think how well-prepared you'll be to pick the bowl games.

This week's games: (all times are ET)

Thursday, August 28
8:00 PM #23 Wake Forest at Baylor
9:00 PM Oregon St. at Stanford

Saturday, August 20
12:00 PM Syracuse at Northwestern
12:00 PM W. Kentucky at Indiana
3:30 PM Utah at Michigan
3:30 PM #3 USC at Virginia
3:30 PM Oklahoma St. at Washington St.
5:00 PM Appalachian State at #7 LSU
7:00 PM W. Michigan at Nebraska
8:00 PM #24 Alabama at #9 Clemson
8:00 PM Michigan St. at California
8:30 PM #20 Illinois at #6 Missouri
10:00 PM Washington at #21 Oregon

Sunday, August 31st
7:30 PM Colorado State at Colorado

Monday, September 1st
4:00 PM Fresno State at Rutgers
8:00 PM #18 Tennessee at UCLA

It's the first week, so there are quite a few "gimme picks" in there. But it's college football, you never know for sure what's going to happen. I hope to be receiving your picks soon. Have a good week everyone.

Some of these games are actually pretty tough...you never know what you're going to get out of an Okie State or a Michigan State, especially on the road.

I really like Utah to pull the upset at Michigan (even though I picked Big Blue). And I feel the same way about App State @ LSU as I felt about them last year at Michigan--there's no way they actually win, but they might compete for a while. So we'll see.

I really look forward to Bama-Clemson, even though with ABC's coverage I probably won't get to see it. Sometimes I hate living in Big Eleven country.

And since I feel like rambling, does anyone here think Georgia can survive the SEC schedule unscathed (or that it will matter?) Personally, I like the Gators and Superman to play USC for all the marbles. Any thoughts?

Did I pick Stanford? I think I picked Stanford. I hope I picked Stanford.

I just realized how pathetic it is to post on a blog or a message board over a clash of unranked teams on a Thursday night in August. My apologies to all.

I finally remembered my password from last year. Now I'm in the ballgame, even though I didn't pick Harbaugh's boys. (Stretching out for the endzone with 47 seconds left? Really???)

Yeah, I didn't see the play, but you've got to be smart there. I did like the toughness there running back showed (I just flipped over during SC/NC State breaks). And wasn't it nice to hear the crisp voice of Ron Franklin again? Oh my!

No worries, Nate, you picked Stanford. :) As did Doug (aka The Rev). You guys are the only ones 2-0 after Thursday night. Everyone else is 1-1. Clyde also got Stanford, but Baylor couldn't come through with the upset for him. Perhaps the Demon Deacons really did deserve their first, preseason, national ranking.

One strange quirk this first week: Dr. L and his sons picked the same winner for each game this week. Now Brett isn't included in that (he really is too busy with his NFL fantasy league), but three sets of identical picks is still rather uncanny. It's only the first weekend, though. There's still plenty of time to get some separation in there.

P.S. I'm really wishing now that I had the Kentucky/Louisville game in the mix this week.

Did anyone else watch the UCLA-Tennessee game? What a great story, with Craft just about killing his team in the 1st half, and being the hero in the 2nd. Sounds like a script for...Hollywood. And I have to say, there is no more serene place on earth than the Rose Bowl on a late afternoon.

I saw some of each half, which included the end. Great stuff from Craft, but poor clock management on the final drive and a foolish pooch kick kept it from ending in regulation.

Yeah, I saw the game. Tennessee more or less shot themselves in the foot too many times. If not for stupid penalties and 1 costly turnover, UCLA never even has a chance late in the game. Give the Bruins some credit, though. They're defense was tough and they kept coming.
