Week 11: I Think They're Tired

For the fifth week in a row, the Michigan defense blows another lead (and the last four have been halftime leads). As bad as this team has played this year, there is only one game in which the Wolverines never had a lead. And that was against Notre Dame, one of two games this season Michigan actually out-gained their opponent.

It seems this Michigan team simply lacks depth. How else do you return eight starters from last years' defense and give up nine touchdowns to Purdue?! With their back-up quarterback no less. I've also been missing Vance Bedford as I watch all these open receivers running around the Michigan secondary all season. If only the Wolverines could have at least shown that they could cover an underneath route, that hook and ladder never happens.

You might think at least the offense did their job this week and the defense simply needed to pick up the slack. Well, yes and no. While the offense had no turnovers and a season high of 35 points (7 points goes to special teams), they only had 300 yards of total offense. In the first half, they had one drive over three and a half minutes. Every other drive for the rest of the game, except for the 2:45 and 5:54 scoring drives in the fourth quarter, were under two minutes. Even when the offense is playing fairly well, they can't maintain consistent possession throughout the course of the game.

The third quarter is what killed us. The defense starts off by letting the Boilermakers go 80 yards to tie it up and the offense only keeps the ball for 3:10 all quarter which was good for 2 drives, 7 plays and 26 yards. And that was the difference, Purdue never stopped moving the chains. It's tough to win games if you can't keep the ball.

Utah and Va Tech win...I'm back in the saddle again!

By the by, some unkown columnist (and I realize this is the worst case in history of an unnamed source) was quoted on "Around the Horn" as saying that Michigan was in danger of becoming...Nebraska.

Consider the pot stirred.
